Gutters and Downspouts, what you need to do before the snow fly's!

Up here in northern New England, November is that in between month were the warm days of summer have faded with your forth of July tan and the fallen leaves remind you that winter is right around the corner. Those leaves should also remind you that your gutters and downspouts need to be cleaned and in good repair.

There are two ways of gutter cleaning, THE OLD WAY which means taking out your ladder, making sure that it is the right size for the job, a good pair of work gloves and a light plastic bucket are essential. The ladder should not be directly on the gutters, some gutters are made of very thin metal or vinyl and can not with stand the pressure of a ladder. Use an S-hook to hook the bucket to the ladder leaving your hands free to clean out your gutters. You want to use the bucket to put all those nasty leaves in.  When cleaning the gutters make sure you clean well around the the grates at the top of the downspouts. You should also inspect that they are still in tact and not rusted through. Other areas of inspection include the gutters themselves, look for cracks or tears especially at the seams and end pieces. You also need to examine is the fascia board, the fascia board is typically the vertical board which spans across the rafter ends and supports the gutters. You want to make sure the fascia board is in tack and that the gutter is sealed tight against it, other wise water and leaves will work their way in,  then during the winter they will freeze forcing the gutter and downspout away from the fascia.

THE NEW WAY is to use an automatic gutter system such as Gutter Topper, means no more gutter cleaning! This unique system allows water to flow into gutter while keeping leaves away. Unlike many other gutter guard systems which have a mesh cover which can catch leaves or be clogged with pollen, the Gutter Topper system uses a solid cover strong enough to walk on. We at Dalyn Solutions are an exclusive provider of Gutter Topper systems in the New London NH area. We also provide other gutter products such seamless, copper and aluminum gutters and downspouts.
